When there's one at the beginning of each chapter, it's like a little teaser for the chapter.<br /><br />About maps: I remember when I was 15 my mom gave me a fantasy book I'd never heard of before. I was a little skeptical about it, but I remember opening it and seeing the map at the beginning and thinking to myself, "Well, at least it has a proper map,"--like the map assured me it might be worth reading, haha. I'm not as prejudiced anymore, but still, a map is a nice thing to have to help solidify the fantasy world in the reader's mind.
